Jeff Cavins -THERMOTRON - DECIPLE SHIP-- vs CHRISTIAN FOLLOWER

OK

SURE -- YOU GO TO CHURCH-- BUT AT THERMOTRN -- YOU ARE A DECIPLE--

let's start with prayer
0:09
i wanna talk to you about a topic I
0:12
that has to do with offering the
world a better life
0:15
but offering the world a better life
really starts with
0:19
us and our lives and the witness
that we provide
0:23
in the world and so I'm gonna talk
about something that is very
0:27
challenge and probing and job
0:31
world cause you to look at yourself
in the mirror and say
0:34
where Am I in my life with Christ so
let's pray
0:38
and ask the Lord to open up our hearts
and begin this
0:42
incredible conference which really
kicks off tonight I like to talk to this
0:47
afternoon about
0:48
a topic that his is barely got my
heart
0:51
a lot and that is the topic of
0:54
the relationship between a disciple
0:57
and the rabbi our relationship
between
1:01
a follower of Jesus and Jesus
1:04
the great rabbi and I like to
challenge you to examine your own life
1:09
to see where you are %ah it's time
to ask some questions today
1:14
about your relationship with the Lord
and it's a good time for you really to
1:18
ask yourself
1:19
where am I at with with the lower
1:22
if we're going to affect the world
and we're gonna have a profound impact
1:27
on the world offer the world a
better life
1:30
then we have to get a hold of that
better life
1:33
ourselves and we have to not only
learn about that better life
1:37
we have till we have to live that
better life and we have to let that light shine
1:42
and I'm convinced more than ever
that
1:45
the key to letting that light shine
is related to the
1:50
intensity and the focus of our
1:53
own relationships with Jesus Christ
that personal relationship that we have
1:58
that also takes into consideration
the whole family i've got
2:02
the church like to talk about you
2:05
today pope john paul the second set
2:09
he said God is opening before the
church the horizons of humanity
2:13
more fully prepared for the sewing
up the gospel
2:16
he said I sense the moment has come
to commit
2:20
all the churches energies to and New
Evangelization
2:23
into the mission no believer in
Christ
2:26
no institution at the church can
avoid this supreme duty
2:30
to proclaim Christ to all people's
2:33
we call it the new evangelization
because there was the original leave
2:37
angela is a ship in Jesus
2:39
who was a jew and Jesus who was a
2:42
rabbi turned the world upside down
with 12
2:47
man and I like to focus on that one
point today that I believe was critical
2:52
in the changing the world at that
point is that cheeses had
2:56
disciples Jesus had disciples
3:00
he had man who are committed to
following him and give up
3:04
everything to follow him and those
man who were not a
3:08
any particular talent or were not
particularly well-known
3:12
literally turned the world upside down
without one single
3:17
iPhone there were a couple of
Android's but there was no iPhones
3:23
available cheeses
3:27
in a lot of people don't realize
that's when you ask the question
3:31
who was the first missionary who is
the first missionary sent to the world and
3:37
the answer is Jesus
3:39
red F Taurus missioner Redemptorist
missio
3:43
talks about how Jesus was the first
if Angeles
3:47
in the world the first missionary
sent
3:51
from the heart up the father and
during jesus' time there was no doubt those who
3:56
were
3:57
who live with those who are
fascinated with him when Jesus was walking the
4:00
sides a
4:01
besides the Sea of Galilee and he
was going to rob kane and now using Galilee
4:06
and down in
4:07
down in judea there were a lot of
people who are very fascinated with 7-day
4:12
they no doubt even went to his
speaking engagements
4:16
is Jesus was known to be speaking
overhearing a part-time summer sales go
4:19
over here that guy heard is really
good
4:22
my cousin has tape series
4:25
it so they would go in they would
listen to Jesus you give some he also talks in
4:29
there was a lot of people are
fascinated with a
4:31
you know and they might have even
had a few of the series couple books
4:35
maybe even saw monkey WT and a few
times and
4:39
they were pretty fascinated with him
but there was a certain group
4:43
other all the people that heard
about Jesus
4:46
two thousand years ago there was a a
certain group of men
4:50
whose relationship went whose
relationship with Jesus
4:53
went beyond fascination
4:56
went totally beyond fascination a
lot of people are fascinated
5:01
but there is a group that went
beyond fascination these men
5:04
were called disciples they were
called disciples they were passionate
5:10
dedicated followers of Jesus and
they were formed
5:13
by him and they became like him
5:18
they were his disciples
5:22
but what would the first eventual is
a shin have become
5:26
two thousand years ago if those
twelve men
5:29
that followed Jesus were simply
fascinated with them
5:34
and bought his CDs and listen to
them occasionally
5:38
and just sorta went about their
normal life the way
5:42
they were living before they met
what we have had
5:46
a world turned upside down what was
it about dole's man in their decision to
5:51
follow Jesus and what was it about
cheeses
5:53
and his ability to form those man
that turns the known world
5:57
up side down
6:01
I believe that was the intimate
relationship that they had with him
6:04
and outta that intimate relationship
with Jesus came this
6:08
this powerful dynamo a church
6:11
that was not afraid to die
6:15
I believe that they overcame by
sacramental life the blood of the Lamb
6:20
the word their testimony and they
did not love their lives
6:24
even to the death and so something
happened in the time that they spent
6:29
with cheeses
6:30
that change them into the type a man
who are not afraid to die
6:34
and went beyond anything that they
ever imagined
6:38
I really believe the party the New
Evangelization involves
6:41
a group of people like this we're
not interested in just learning more
6:45
butter interested in being
transformed to go beyond anything that ever dreamed
6:49
possible
6:50
the got to do great things with
their lives
6:55
Scriptures tell us in James which
doctor hun was talking about the
6:59
apply biblical studies conference
that took place
7:03
his prior to this one we are
studying the vocab James and James chapter 122
7:07
says but
7:08
be doers of the word and not hearers
only deceiving yourselves
7:14
deceiving yourselves to hear the
Word of God but not do it
7:18
in something becoming self-deception
that's one thing to be deceived by other
7:23
people
7:24
but it's another thing to deceive
yourself
7:28
and I have to be honest with you
there's times in my life where I have
7:32
deceived myself where I got into
studying the Bible which
7:37
is what I do and I love and i've
always I've done that since I was 18 years old
7:40
I
7:41
love it but there are times were all
studying and then suddenly I realized
7:45
not doing this I mean if you've ever
been there before
7:50
I've been there before and there is
a danger
7:54
that we can get into that I have
fallen into
7:57
from time to time you know that
dangerous it's a right
8:01
and you know what the right is the
rot
8:05
is that we begin
8:09
to study and the studying
8:13
out the word be comes our faith
8:17
the gathering of the knowledge up
the faith actually becomes
8:21
our faith you know what i'm saying
8:24
that we are busy doing that which we
should we need to study its part iv:
8:28
part being a disciple of Jesus
studying and learning but what happens is
8:32
is that my catholicism becomes learning
catholicism
8:37
someone says are you a Catholic oh
yeah ya
8:40
I've gotta see the tape series I
have
8:45
are you okay are you a Catholic oh
yeah look at the DVD C-section oh they're all
8:49
the mall the movies we watch
8:51
are you a Catholic she have watching
WTF
8:57
better are you a Catholic
9:00
heck yeah I got a fish on my bumper
sticker
9:06
so what happens is is that
9:09
we sort of fool ourselves into
thinking
9:12
that acquiring the faith is the face
9:17
know what I'm sayin or put another
way
9:20
catholicism becomes our hobby
9:25
who and I have been guilty of from
time to time where
9:29
where my face becomes my hobby
9:33
now there are there's a difference
between different kinds of believers
9:38
I'll say this to play anybody down
just a sort of kind of
9:42
have have a way of looking at our
own lives where we are
9:46
there are what I would call fans
have Jesus
9:50
and is nothing wrong with being a
fan %uh Jesus the dictionary
9:54
defines a fan as an enthusiastic
admirer
9:59
how many of you would say at one
time or another in so can say right now
10:02
I'm an enthusiastic admirer Jesus I
am I meant to Siesta Key admire
10:07
I'm a fan I'm a fan Jesus
10:10
but there's a difference between a a
fan %uh Jesus is an enthusiastic admire
10:15
and a follower up Jesus
10:18
as a disciple you know what i'm
saying
10:22
there's a difference between being a
fan and being a follower
10:27
a fan is someone who knows all about
the subject
10:31
and they're enthusiastic like for
example
10:34
I grew up in Minnesota home love the
1987 +91 world champion Minnesota Twins
10:42
and as a kid growing up in Minnesota
I was a big Minnesota Twins fan
10:47
and I can remember in 1965
10:50
with the twins played the Dodgers in
the World Series sandy Kofax in all these
10:54
guys at
10:55
Metropolitan Stadium I know all the
statistics on the 1965 twins aren't able
11:00
to come and kill a brood
11:01
Tony leavin Cesar Tovar Bob Alice
senator Labadie
11:06
I can tell you about the statistics
later on if kirby puckett
11:09
the Metrodome in the 87 twins the 91
twins
11:13
I know all about and i cant you come
over to my house and you see the twins
11:17
bumper-sticker
11:18
I got my kenitzer dotted and and I'm
all excited jynona
11:22
and as someone may say pet even
snows
11:25
a small hole does he know baseball
11:29
but the truth of the matter is I've
never stepped on a professional field in
11:33
my life
11:36
I'm just of fan but I'm gonna
11:39
doosy stéphane oh yeah
11:43
and the same thing can happen to us
as catholics
11:47
to where we can become enthusiastic
fans for Catholicism
11:52
you catholic whole yes
11:57
I've been every defending the faith
conference
12:01
I can tell you statistics about
Scott I like you would not believe
12:06
and i cant
12:10
I can tell you all kinds of things
12:12
are you a Catholic oh yeah and I've
ira I'm telling you what I'm
12:16
passionate about that face but at
the end of the day
12:21
I never really did 80s other than
12:24
I acquired and so there is a danger
12:29
getting into a right a being a fan
12:34
rather than a follower but i wanna
12:37
propose this two thousand years ago
12:41
fans didn't change the worst
12:44
fans can't change game only those
who are on the field can
12:50
change the game only those who are
involved in the bath they're the ones
12:55
that changed the game
12:56
and that's why the world was turned
upside down because 12 guys
13:00
who initially heard Jesus and bought
that for CD set listen to it
13:04
brought it home their families
listen to it and they made a decision
13:07
I'm gonna follow back I'm gonna
follow him
13:11
I want to become like him how many
have you ever been to college in you had a
13:15
professor and you wanted to know
everything about that what doctor that
13:18
Professor new
13:19
you were so impressed about what
they knew you wanted to you want to know
13:23
everything the top from Professor
new but you didn't want to become like the
13:27
professor well in Jesus case these
guys wanted to know what jesus knew what they
13:33
wanted to become
13:34
like Jesus they want to know how do
you pray how do you do this
13:38
how do you do that so what are the
first questions I'd like to ask
13:42
you is this is there a chance
13:46
that you are following right now
13:49
and edited version %uh Jesus
13:53
well I mean by that
13:56
is there a chance that you're
following and edited version
13:59
ag's something that you heard
14:03
or something that you might have
read but you're not quite sure because
14:07
you have never really met him and
spent that time
14:11
intimate communion and prayer
14:14
and getting to know him and edited
version %uh
14:19
Jesus or are you following
14:22
cheeses now back in Jesus day and I
wanna take you through this just to give
14:27
you an idea
14:27
what a disciple was there the word
for disciple in hebrew is
14:32
told me Taal MIT
14:35
Tommy floral Tommy Dean disciples
14:38
and what is it the site below the
cycle is a discipline follower of a teacher
14:43
and the call of the disciples to
become like the teacher
14:46
now we're gonna look at this because
this was the model that was used in the
14:50
first century this is the
14:51
the scene God chose to come into
14:55
and to use it to demonstrate the
relationship that he wanted
14:59
with his followers which would then
be we %ah
15:03
accented and brought to a much
larger level
15:06
when we come to a bridal spousal
relationship but when it comes to that
15:10
the daily walk with Christ I think
that
15:13
the rabbi disciple relationship
really expresses well
15:17
how we can see our own lives
following Christ the way the disciples did
15:22
two thousand years ago because when I
read that the New Testament you know
15:26
those those books in our
15:27
in the New Testament when I read
that I
15:31
think to myself wish I could follow
in that way
15:35
have you ever thought that before
would be nice just to get up in the morning
15:40
just to be able to follow
15:41
and to listen to him and to do what
he's doing
15:45
that's really what I think our
hearts cry as not to just get up and say
15:49
I'm gonna learn more today which is
fun
15:52
no doubt but gardening is fun too
and a lot of other hobbies are fun too
15:58
but we're looking for something more
than a hobby we're looking for something
16:02
more that
16:03
just learning we want to be
transformed so
16:06
in the first century there was a
process to become a disciple
16:09
and there were a lot of people's
disciples I'll
16:13
shammai had disciples arm
16:16
and ahh lol had disciples
16:19
most to the great rabbis back in
Jesus day had on
16:22
average a five disciples they have
very many
16:26
lol had seventy decide see he had
the most
16:30
but Jesus had how many disciples
16:33
12 number 12 is so is is related to
the Old Testament
16:37
isn't but if you wanted to be a
disciple here's how a young boy would grow up in
16:41
the first century
16:43
from the ages up six to 10
16:46
from the age is a six to 10 a little
boy would go through what's called the bait
16:51
safer okay debate safer
16:54
the house in the book the house in
the book
16:57
and so when Jesus was a little boy
was six years old the Jewish boys would go
17:02
to the local synagogue
17:03
called the bait safer and you would
attend the school five days a week
17:08
typically Monday through Friday and
there would be a local synagogue teacher
17:13
in the local synagogue teacher would
begin teaching these boys
17:16
the torah the five books of Moses
17:19
and so they would start committing
the five books of Moses to
17:24
memory no a while later Jerome said
in bethlehem Saint Jerome said
17:29
that even just our a couple of her
years after
17:33
after Jesus that they could barely
find
17:37
a young boy in the jerusalem
bethlehem
17:40
area who have not committed most to
the torah
17:44
to memory that's pretty intense
17:48
would be something all of our kids
by the time they were in third grade had
17:52
the torah memorized
17:54
have the Catechism Emperor just it
would be incredible
17:59
so on the first day the class the
rabbi would do something very special the
18:02
rabbi would take honey
18:04
and you would cover their personal
slate with honey
18:07
in the shape up words from the Torah
it when the kids would learn star
18:11
learning Torah they were allowed to
lick the honey
18:15
of the slate which they started to
learn that the Word of God is sweet
18:19
to the taste and they developed if
you will and appetite
18:23
for the word to eat the word and
they would eat at
18:27
honey remember the scripture says in
Psalm 119 103
18:32
me the words of God be sweet to your
taste sweeter than honey
18:36
to your mouse well then what about
the a chip 10
18:40
the boys with transition from the PT
se faire the house at the port
18:44
to the bait how lewd
18:48
K so they went from 10 to 14 they
would start to attend
18:52
debate how mood now the best to the
best students would continue one
18:56
at this point the next H the this
big toe mood meant a wholesome learning
19:02
and roughly from ages 10 to 14 in
the big toe mood
19:07
you would memorize the rest to the
Hebrew Scriptures all the way
19:11
to Molokai so by thirteen fourteen
years have each
19:14
you had mock me almost if not up now
all the Scriptures
19:18
memorize to some degree or another
extremely familiar with that
19:22
and even today in jewish seminaries
they still do the same
19:26
you would also at this age begin aid
learning technique
19:29
called Q&A questions and answers
19:34
and now today in schools we memorize
information that we have to write down
19:38
of
19:38
for quizzes right learn this you
gonna you gonna have a quiz
19:42
so we learn things like two plus two
is
19:46
for right but back then
19:50
there was a little bit different
today's teachers love to give tests for the
19:54
students memorize
19:55
lists but in Jesus day the rabbi
taught you to answer
19:59
with the questions of the rabbi said
to you Sun
20:02
what is to plus to
20:06
the student would respond with the
question up
20:09
what is 8 -4
20:13
or what is the square root of 16
20:16
so if your teacher said son what is
two plus two you would say
20:20
what is the square root of 16
20:23
which demonstrated not only that you
knew the answer
20:26
but you knew the answer from
different angles it's kind of like you feel
20:30
logical jeopardy
20:33
you ever seen jeopardy where they
give you the answer
20:36
what do you have to do you gotta
give them the question and that's how this
20:40
took place in this learning
20:41
process by the way when Jesus
parents come in finding the temple what we find
20:46
him doing
20:49
is asking questions as he is a
teaching and learning
20:54
as a young boy twelve-years-old
found him in the temple sitting in the midst
20:59
to the teachers
21:00
both listening to them and asking
them questions well then
21:04
at the age of fourteen certain
students would go to what is called debate
21:08
me drop ship debate need rosh
21:12
and this was right around 13 to 14
years old and it was typically the best
21:17
the best students would move on at
this point
21:20
and at the mall 13 to 14 years old
21:24
a young boy if you aspire to be a
disciple one of the great rabbis would
21:28
approach the rabbi and say
21:29
rabbi I want to become your disciple
21:33
I want to become your Tom need I
want to become your student
21:37
please let me in your bait meet rosh
21:41
your house study let me comment
21:44
be with you and study with you and
so the rabbi would say okay
21:48
and then the rabbi would ask a
series of questions to find out
21:51
if you are really ready and if
you're the best to the best and so the rabbi
21:55
with
21:55
make a determination as to whether
you could become this is the key
21:59
third the rabbi would make a
decision whether you could become like him
22:04
and if you think you could become
like him there's no way he's going to ask you
22:08
to become his disciple but if you
thought that you have what it takes
22:12
to become like him he would say to
you at that point
22:15
leff higher I left
22:19
of how I come follow me
22:22
and so cheese is the one that makes
this frees up come follow me
22:26
this is what a rabbi said to this tourists
future disciples
22:30
you come follow me you leave
everything now
22:33
and you follow me
22:36
a popular document in the first
century pure chaos vote the sayings on the
22:40
father says in
22:41
chapter 1 verse for that a student
22:45
when he finds the rabbi should be at
the end of the day
22:48
covered in the dust up the rabbi
22:52
which means you follow them all day
long you listen to on
22:55
all day long incidently back then
when the rabbi talk
22:59
he SATs and the students stood
23:03
so I like you all to Stand for the
remainder of the conference
23:09
but they with they would stand and
while the rabbi Sat and he would teach
23:14
but what does this say about the
early disciples
23:17
the early disciples you know when a
boy was 13 or 14 years old they went to the
23:21
rabbi said I wanna be your disciple
23:24
at the ages 10 to 14 they were also
being taught their father's trade
23:30
in if the rabbi didn't think that
they had what it took to follow him to become
23:34
like him you know what he would say
23:35
he would seek go ply your father's
trade which meant
23:39
your father stranger to be a
fisherman you going to be a fisherman
23:43
you are not going to become one of
my disciples
23:46
so what does that say about the twelve
men that Jesus chose
23:49
they were chosen by anybody
23:53
they were not selected by anybody
they were passed over
23:57
on the Sandlot basketball game they
were picked last
24:01
on the kickball teams if you ever
felt like that
24:06
have you ever felt non chosen
24:10
they were all plying their father's
trade
24:14
once the rabbi chose you
24:17
and said to you left authorize
24:20
come follow me at that point the
rabbi they would say to you
24:24
take my joke upon you and learn from
me
24:29
take my yoke upon you now that
doesn't mean that you put I wouldn't joke around
24:33
your neck for the rest your life
24:35
and follow but to to take the yellow
cover rabbi
24:39
means that you are now going to
begin to see the world the way the rabbi sees the
24:43
world
24:45
and so when cheeses chose the 12
disciples
24:49
it meant something did and he said
to them take my yoke upon you
24:54
it means a couple of things one is
this
24:58
it means that Jesus
25:01
has chosen you if you're here today
25:05
you're not here today what are you
doing here
25:10
just suddenly realize I got myself
in a corner there
25:14
if you are here today it means that
you are
25:20
either a serious fan or inquire
25:23
or your follower it means that you
are either on the verge of saying
25:28
yes to his invitation to follow in
or you said
25:31
yes and you're looking to go deeper
for you said yes
25:34
and you are really following up
you're somewhere along that line
25:38
right now but window in Jesus says
to every single one of us
25:42
come follow me he saying ivy leaves
you can become like me
25:47
you see it's not dependent all
25:50
on the student is dependent upon the
skillet the rabbi to teach
25:54
into a parked himself to his
students and you comment have you know
25:58
we are following the greatest
teacher in the history
26:02
up the world right in which he looks
at you he says
26:10
you come follow me all make fisher's
amend
26:14
are you it means that you are chose
26:17
enemies that Jesus believe that you
can become
26:20
like amp what if you're going to
become like em their
26:24
pass to feed that relationship that
is indicative of a rabbi and a disciple
26:30
relationship
26:30
echoes deeper than that into a
spousal relationship
26:34
as we've learned so often in our
Bible studies
26:37
enemies we must leave everything
26:42
you know there's an Old Testament
model for this isn't there
26:46
Elijah any liesa we have the story
feel I should deletion first Kings chapter 19
26:52
and in the shop was invited by Eliza
to follow him
26:56
and what did is he should do you the
show slaughter his yoke of oxen
27:02
he slaughtered as joke a box in
burned his plows took cooked the meat
27:07
cook to me and gave it to the poor
in all those around and then
27:12
followed Elisha you got the same
model in the Old Testament
27:16
I'm gonna leave everything to follow
ELISA the New Testament I'm gonna leave
27:20
everything
27:21
to follow cheeses I let me ask you a
hypothetical question here
27:26
let's say that you go into
27:31
Starbucks and you walk into a
Starbucks
27:35
I know so you won't do that escape
let's say you going to a coffee shop
27:40
you going to a coffee shop
27:44
and you're getting ready to pay for
your skinny chai latte
27:47
K whatever foo foo drink you wanna
get so
27:51
you're ready to pay for your foo foo
drink in your stand up to the counter in
27:54
all sudden
27:55
you look over and there's cheese is
in the corner
27:58
and you look you see the guy
28:02
is that it's in yeah he comes in
here every day
28:06
sets yeah
28:10
is here oh my gosh arm
28:13
okay just forget the make it to make
it to
28:16
make it to n you walk over there
28:21
now what with the encounter be like
in your current state
28:24
I love walking with Jesus would you
walk over and say I'm
28:28
excuse me I'm
28:33
JFK prints I know
28:39
would my with my introduction be
such that
28:42
I'm not sure we've met I'm
28:46
I don't want to say I never thought
you'd be here this is
28:51
now obviously this probably is not
going to happen
28:56
I'm it happens to be a lot there is
probably not gonna happen %uh most
28:59
people
29:00
but would you go over to him and say
say on
29:03
I love allow me to introduce I want
you to meet my family
29:06
would it be this unusually you know
kind of
29:10
stiff first introduction
29:14
would be cheese this is a
continuation
29:18
I can see with this is a
continuation over relationship we're just talking
29:22
yesterday about
29:23
this I was worshipping in adoration
or would it seem like
29:26
such of foreign day say cheeses I
29:30
this is so I've got alt 73 your
books
29:38
ago
29:42
multiple versions of it
29:44
sign
29:55
and I want you to meet my family
29:56
I know you're affected know your daughters
better than you
30:00
they spend more time with me
30:03
but what would it be like if you
were meeting him
30:06
now in a in any relationship
30:10
that you have I would like for
example
30:14
you know with my wife and I when we
were dating oh we would all the time
30:18
and then there comes a point in
every relationship we have to make a decision
30:21
are we gonna go further with this
relationship is this relationship can
30:25
stay right here
30:26
and %uh some people call it %uh up
30:29
DTR the college up defining the
relationship
30:33
this is defending the faith DTR is
defining
30:36
the relationship where there comes
out awkward moment where you look each other
30:41
and you have to ask
30:42
where we gonna do are we gonna go further
with this relationship
30:45
or is this is far as we go and if
you were beating with Jesus and their coffee
30:50
shop
30:50
and he sat down with you and he said
to you he said
30:53
where we at where you
30:57
where we have is this is far as
we're gonna go
31:00
or you can come follow we have to
make that decision
31:06
at one point or another in our
relationship but I have a question for
31:09
you
31:10
it's a very good question and that
is this if cheeses
31:14
look you in the eyes today
31:17
in that coffee shop he said
margaret's sit down John sit down
31:23
Mary sit down ducts in town
31:27
Jesse said down call saddam
31:30
look at me where we have
31:36
lord you know I've been so busy
31:39
I know I know all things
31:44
and Wieser come up excuses and he
says where we out and he looked at you
31:51
not listen for psych if he looked at
you in the arts
31:54
and said giorni everybody just say
your name will quickly
31:58
I am inviting
32:02
you purse to become
32:06
my this site if Jesus looked at you
today and said
32:12
today I am inviting you personally
to become my disciple
32:17
what would you say now most of us
would say obviously is for some rhetorical
32:25
isn't yes
32:27
but that here's the question: if
Jesus
32:30
asked you today at that coffee shop
look to your right in the eyes and said
32:34
will you follow me and be my
disciple you said yes to the here's the question:
32:39
is there any chance that tomorrow
will look the same
32:44
as yesterday if Jesus asked you
today at the coffee shop
32:51
will you be my disciple and follow
me let me ask you
32:54
will tomorrow look the same as
yesterday and we all know the answer
32:59
no okay would we
33:02
how many of us would say most likely
at this could be the same thing out some
33:06
people might some people
33:07
living very holy lives I and not
exactly their
33:11
completely but to say that yes
33:14
tomorrow will look the same as
yesterday sort have revealed that I'm not
33:18
really sure what he's asking me
because I'm
33:22
if he asked me Jeff would you become
my disciple
33:25
I might have to say you know um
sorta funny was
33:35
and Jesus well we don't get together
well I know but I read all the books
33:40
ignatius puts out
33:42
yeah I know you do but i'm talking
about. will you follow
33:47
will you be my disciple how how much
time is this gonna require
33:52
everything everything I need to talk
to my wife
33:57
that this is gonna require
34:01
everything she's to get in on this
34:04
so if Jesus asked you that
34:08
you have to answer that question
john paul the second set that we Christians
34:17
are called
34:18
to an apostolic courage to go out
and to change
34:22
the world I believe that there are
certain
34:25
marks other disciple that if we are
going to say yes to Jesus
34:30
and I'm just curious when I
mentioned to you
34:34
this idea of getting up in the
morning and not just
34:40
going about your schedule like
there's no point or purpose
34:44
but getting up in the morning and
the first thing that you think about
34:48
is I am a disciple of Jesus
34:51
I am a follower of Jesus I am NOT us
34:54
spousal partner 12 with Jesus that
from the moment that you get a
34:59
to the moment you go to bed at night
your life is consumed with cheese
35:06
and his mother Saints and the
sacraments
35:09
in the family and you know the whole
story you want everybody else to come in
35:14
and you want to do is work and you
wanna be transformed to me
35:17
that's living that's what life is
all about
35:21
that's what life is all about you
see what people are involved in today with
35:25
all the trivia in their life
35:27
it some Maisie that we are so bored
35:31
and so unchallenged and so depressed
35:34
when you could walk every day with
Jesus know what are some other marks are the
35:39
disciple
35:39
therefore gonna be disciples a price
what were some other marks
35:43
backed into a disciple go through
these rather quickly with you number one
35:46
a disciple is intent on being formed
35:50
to Christ a disciple is intent on
being formed to Christ
35:55
we talked to way he talks we walked
away he walks
36:02
we treat people the way he treats
people we pray the way he prays
36:08
we bring healing the way he brings
healing we have understanding
36:12
in the way that he has understand
it's not
36:15
learning just doctrines and passing
them on
36:19
but is showing people how to live a
new way of living Jesus becomes the living
36:25
example
36:26
life sometimes I think to myself
36:32
when I get involved in so many
things that take me off the path
36:36
I think to myself all to have
36:39
one all encompassing focus
36:43
in my life to have one
36:47
all-encompassing focus to get up
36:50
and to be so passionate you know
I've got a neighbor
36:53
who gets up in the morning and he is
so
36:57
cash about harley-davidson
motorcycles
37:01
thats all
37:04
he thinks his harleys he dresses
37:08
in Harley gear he has other guys to
come or they stand outside all like this for
37:12
half an hour
37:13
look at those machines they drive up
and down the black they go to Sturgis they
37:17
do everything
37:18
their lives are consumed with Harley
Davidson but to be so consumed with
37:25
Jesus
37:27
great jewish scholar by the name of
37:30
she will suffer I E said a disciple
37:34
did not get this a disciple did not
grasp the full significance of his
37:40
teachers
37:41
learning in all its nuances except
37:44
through prolonged intimacy with his
teacher
37:48
this is the one the leading Second
Temple scholars
37:51
in knows discipleship from this
first century very very well
37:55
and he saying that is a disciple did
not grasp the full significance of his
37:59
teachers learning in all of its
nuances
38:01
except through prolonged intimacy
with his teacher
38:05
through close association with his
rich in profound
38:09
my that's what were called to write
38:14
to know the mind of Christ to have
the mind of Christ never to the disciple has
38:18
a passion
38:19
about doing the will of God
38:22
a disciple has a passion about doing
the will of God this study the Bible
38:26
this study the Catechism this study
the lives of the saints
38:30
the disciples jus up his will
38:34
for the will of the Lord to do with
the Lord wants and what's the mission
38:38
of the Messiah and how do I fit in
38:42
jesus said in John 831 he said that
the Jews who had believed in him
38:47
if you continue in my word York
truly
38:50
my disciples if you continue with my
work
38:55
the disciple number three the
disciple knows his teachers
38:59
Voice the disciple noses teacher's
voice
39:03
to be a disciple is to know that
Voice
39:07
and you can only know that voice you
know that scripture says that
39:10
a the my disciples know my voice
39:14
you know that if you go to Israel
and I got israel every January got a second
39:18
time first trip this year if you
wanna go
39:21
if you've been there before
sometimes you going on the countryside in judea
39:25
you'll see one shepherd with his
flock
39:28
you see another shepherd with his
flock sometimes even a third Shepherd and they
39:32
all come together to talk
39:34
and their flocks mingle and you look
at it you think how are they gonna separate
39:38
that mess and that's like the world
today you got Jesus and his followers
39:44
intermingling with all the world at
work and sports events and everything else
39:48
and you look at it and say well who
belongs to Jesus
39:52
all Jesus has to do is speak in his
sheep know his
39:55
Voice and it's really interesting
because all three shepherds on that
39:59
countryside in judea
40:00
a one-time lol speak up with some
kinda cold word or phrase
40:04
and the sheeple followership they
just
40:07
these all divvy out and the Follow
40:10
their shepherd and knowing the voice
of Jesus
40:15
only come its as a result love
spending time with that
40:19
Voice in adoration in his word
40:23
the Catechism in reading the in
cyclicals and
40:27
and in listening to the heart be to
the church you come to know that voice
40:32
this last year I taped new collation
series
40:37
and I was teaching in philadelphia
and I went in the morning in the second day of
40:42
taping
40:43
and I went to a restaurant with one
of my friends
40:46
his wife and we're up there ordering
our meal
40:50
we're getting our meal and %uh as I
got my meal
40:53
this Cup group A five guys come over
there got great big bibles in their
40:57
hands are all excited you know just
all happy the other finals
41:00
and I looked over at him in a sooo
you have such a joy studying the Bible very
41:05
all we do praise God
41:07
you know you love it I could tell
they were Catholic but
41:13
they were they were evangelicals and
they love story the final
41:17
and %uh as all that's really really
great and I got my meal
41:21
and %uh for from left and i win over
41:24
to the table has just about to sit
down
41:27
and just something said
41:30
go talk to that unity
41:34
how many fewer heard it before you
can't just kinda now with the voice some
41:38
other what's the Lord's will what
will he be doing
41:41
out here you know and so I said my
friends in just a second I think
41:44
boorda's you talk to that guy so for
my food down I walked over
41:48
and he was the only one that was
there he was putting cream in his coffee
41:51
and i seven 3s it anybody can do
this
41:55
I said up tell me
41:59
you how excited you are able to
study how did you get studying the Bible all
42:02
praise God I
42:03
mistake the Bible for fifteen years
now and I said really
42:07
that's just great I said I'm really
curious ha tell me about your personal
42:11
relationship with Jesus
42:13
so he started telling meet me about
this personal relationship with Jesus
42:17
and I so how did you get to know
Jesus he goes well
42:21
I was at this college about fifteen
years ago
42:25
and I was really discourage kinda
down in
42:28
and anyway a priest came up in your
dorm
42:32
and he ended up talking to me any
let me to Christ
42:36
I said really it's fantastic it's a
what school was that he said
42:40
00 is a school of Steubenville Ohio
42:45
Franciscan University and I said
really I went there myself sooo
42:49
are you Catholic as a well I was in
the ninth wasn't it now I is
42:55
II came back to the Catholic Church
I said I think as a minister and I came
42:59
back to churchill so you got my
attention now
43:01
we ended up in a conversation and
got his name
43:05
and dialogue and here was a man was
just a guy at a restaurant
43:09
who we had so much in common
43:13
it was father Michael scallions best
friend let them to Christ
43:18
and hear all these years later in a
coffee shop Jesus sent out one of his
43:22
disciples and said
43:24
come home come home that's the work
to the kingdom
43:28
that's just that's what makes this
so exciting
43:32
the disciple noses teacher's voice
all that something I just
43:35
I wanna treasure how we view it's a
you how many you repay
43:39
I know you would but you pay
big-money to know the voice
43:43
%uh got how many of you would say I
would love to
43:46
only one of you aquatic was also the
rest if you wanna do
43:54
yeah okay money for that
43:59
you paid for the conference with
your paper
44:04
then I pay for that well let's pay
for it in not big money big time
44:10
I pay big-time to hear the voice
44:14
or would you pic big-time to hear
the voices lower
44:19
one more mark I'll give you some
kinda running out of time
44:22
I'll this is my introduction soul
the disciple
44:32
as a number of things that a cycle
does differently %uh a disciple
44:35
I'll a walks in humility
44:38
the cycle works in humility we know
who we are in relationship to God we know
44:42
who we are in relationship to the
world
44:44
we walking in humility humility is
strength and controlled by God
44:48
another one is a we we as disciples
we love
44:52
deeply we love deeply jesus said
they'll know that you are my disciples
44:57
how not the bookcase not your car
not sure CDs
45:03
they'll know that you are my
disciples by your
45:06
love for one another CS lewis won
said that got me a great gamble when he said
45:13
to the world
45:14
you can judge whether they're mine
based on how they treat each other
45:18
and how they love each other and
it's a cycle takes great
45:22
risks in evangelizing great risks
and evangelize
45:26
I could tell you story after story
where I had to put it on the line you know say
45:30
am I gonna take a risk here in open
my mouth are much can be quiet
45:34
let this go but there's another one
that really captures my imagination and that
45:38
is this
45:39
a disciple relates to things in time
45:43
differently a disciple of Jesus
doesn't waste time
45:47
a disciple of Jesus doesn't worship
things
45:51
and consider things the end-all
everything is a means to the end
45:55
and that is to serve God all created
things are for the Creator and His
45:59
purposes
46:00
and we are stewards and so as
disciples we change our relationship
46:04
from owners to Stewart's from
possessors
46:07
to those who were to take care what
God has given us
46:11
the disciple %uh cheeses
46:14
emina end with this the disciple
love Jesus
46:18
dies different the disciple
46:23
love cheeses dies different never
heard that before
46:28
talk the disciple of Jesus lives
differently
46:31
but the disciple of Jesus dies
differently you know we as Catholics we
46:36
pray the Hail Mary
46:37
a lot and you know that the focus is
that prayer
46:40
is that our our out by deaths at the
hour of my death we
46:47
died differently we die hopefully
the state %uh
46:50
rates but we'd die differently
46:53
the world is afraid of death the
world is afraid of death and
46:58
Archbishop Fulton Sheen's gave one
of the best answers to how do you fight
47:02
that fear of death
47:03
you know the early disciples says in
the book of Revelation they overcame
47:07
by the blood of the Lamb the word of
their testimony and they love not their
47:11
lives
47:12
even to the death because we are so
caught up
47:16
in Jesus his mission and that's
certainly true that we have about
47:20
eternity
47:21
terms are following him but
Archbishop Fulton Sheen's said number one fear the
47:27
people have today
47:28
is death and he said you know why
they're so afraid
47:33
he said they're so afraid
47:36
because they've never practiced my
dad in math when I was growing up I hated
47:45
math tests
47:46
my dad had a PhD in math and
electrical engineering he said Jeff it's fun
47:55
such a generation gap here he say
traffic
47:58
it's fun he said listen listen bob
he said if you study for the test
48:03
did you get ready for the test you
QQQ wat bring you good
48:07
but if you're not prepared you get
so scared
48:11
art with Bishop Fulton sheen says
reason we are so afraid of death
48:16
inordinately afraid of death is that
we have not practiced
48:20
and as catholics and disciples of
Jesus we practice
48:24
dying daily we give up our lives
48:27
daily for Jesus but if we're fans a
fan does it die
48:31
for the Yankees a fan doesn't diet
for his team
48:36
he's fair-weather follower of Jesus
48:40
is willing to lay down his life or
her life
48:43
because the the and their trust in
cells
48:47
to the one who can take their soul
have
48:50
and soul we as Catholics
48:53
must practice as disciples
mortifying the flash
48:57
practiced giving ourselves up for
other people
49:00
dying to our own are own will
picking up
49:04
will up Jesus the disciples
49:08
finally make disciples
49:12
the disciple of Jesus
49:15
makes disciples Matthews the last
49:19
chapter jesus said going to all the
world
49:23
and make told me team
49:26
go into all the world and make
disciples
49:30
every one of us has that mandate on
our life
49:33
you've got children God has called
you to make disciples
49:37
if you've got a neighbor God has
called you to make disciples every one of us
49:41
should have
49:41
just a handful of people maybe 2-3
people in our lives
49:44
that we are actively praying for
we're pouring our lives into
49:48
we're meeting at the coffee shop per
se que up Marquardt has a new book I want
49:53
you to read it
49:53
let's go over it together let's pray
together we should be making
49:58
disciples and certainly in the home
we should be making
50:01
disciples a disciple of Jesus
50:05
makes sites so let me encourage you
with two things as we conclude
50:11
two things that I would encourage
you to do as you leave here
50:15
three things
50:20
possibly for is number one
50:24
to commit yourself to go if you're a
fan
50:27
this isn't that this isn't meant to
to put you down but if you're a fan
50:31
recognizes and say I'm not gonna be
just a fan anymore I'm gonna be a follower
50:36
I'm gonna be a disciple make the
adjustments make time for Jesus every
50:41
day
50:41
study is word visit the sacraments
go to Holy Hour
50:45
go to confession regularly get into
it disciplined relationship with him
50:50
wake up it's not all into your head
you've got a real relationship with him
50:54
every day
50:55
okay that's number one there were
two allow
50:58
Jesus daily to edit
51:01
your life allow him to edit your
life
51:05
allowing to take away what needs to
be taken away and allow it to add what
51:09
needs to be
51:10
which can't do it outside of an
intimate relationship and finally I would say
51:14
this
51:14
ways you go out from this conference
start
51:19
giving out free samples
51:22
of Jesus everywhere give out free
samples of Jesus
51:27
every where you go mercy justice
51:31
kindness understand prayer
51:34
a good were being courteous
51:39
being loveless praying for people
51:43
inviting give out free samples you
know how you go to the State Fair somewhere
51:47
else
51:47
and they hand out these little
packets a perfume here it's free
51:51
I okay you open up to put it on and
also
51:55
you know 10 girls wanna go out with
you %uh to buy the whole bottle as a single
52:00
guy so I don't say that
52:01
that so the single high sets and so
a sample
52:10
is designed too sore to catch your
attention
52:13
hopefully you want the whole thing
and I think it's a good idea that his
52:16
disciples
52:17
let's get into the habit of giving
out free samples of Jesus
52:20
everywhere we go white bottle it up
why keep it to ourselves
52:25
why keep it on their bookshelves
assist are given a free samples
52:28
let's just tell people about Jesus
52:31
let's let's be honest with the most
prevalent let's give them a reason to
52:35
ask us about the whole
52:36
that is within its shall we there's
so much more that we could say
52:40
so we will notch
52:44
IV drug of here just a moment salt I
want to conclude
52:49
in prayer but I out a way this has
been so on my heart lately
52:55
and that is going from a fan or
follower and I just hope that encourages you and
53:00
gives you a little bit about
checking your own heart
53:02
and look to that relationship
remember you are chosen you are chosen for
53:08
something your chosen
53:10
for something not just saved from
something
53:13
but saving chosen for something and
that is to serve God
53:18
walk with him in all throughout this
conference start thinking about yourself
53:22
and come for out co2 vina
53:23
start thinking what is a larger
calling me too
53:27
that deeper relationship the new
evangelization
